On the California Coast

It's been three years since I have been in California yet that streak was broken as Samantha and I touched down in San Diego about two and half hours ago.  Given the long weekend ahead, we were deciding on a number of places to go for the holiday but since we have been having the winter from hell, our one criteria was it had to be warm.  Hence, we ended up in San Diego because neither of us have been here before and the average temperature is a perfect 72 degrees.  The best part about it all was that the flight and hotel were absolutely free since we both had enough miles and hotel points (teaches anyone to stay on top of their travel awards).

As the the weekend progresses, I will have much more detail on the city however one thing I can say for sure is that this is one of the cooler cities to fly into.  I had heard this over and over from my Dad but as I was waking up from a nap, it appeared  as we were eye level with apartment buildings in downtown San Diego with high rises on both sides of the plane.  LGA would be comparable to the San Diego airport if it were located on the upper west side of Manhattan and you had fly down Fifth Avenue to approach the airport.

By the time we arrived at our hotel it was already late so we only stayed out for about hour so we could get  an early start to the day. Our hotel is located only two blocks away from Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District which, from my impression, can be comparable to State Street in Madison.  The bars were hopping, people were everywhere and they were dressed for summer...it was great.  I am sure I will have more to report on the nightlife later but stay tuned for updates during the weekend..
